The RMS Olympic was a White Star Line ocean liner, launched in 1910 as the lead ship of the Olympic-class trio, which also included her famous sisters Titanic and Britannic. She entered transatlantic service in 1911 and quickly earned a reputation for reliability and comfort, unlike her ill-fated sister. During the First World War, she was requisitioned as a troopship under the designation HMT Olympic, earning the nickname "Old Reliable" for her service transporting troops and even ramming and sinking a German U-boat in 1918. After the war, she returned to civilian service, undergoing refits to convert her from coal to oil power and continuing to operate the prestigious Southampton–New York route throughout the 1920s. Despite her popularity, the Great Depression and declining passenger numbers took their toll, and she was withdrawn from service in 1935. She was subsequently sold and scrapped, ending a long and largely successful career of nearly a quarter century in 1937.
