MV Wilhelm Gustloff was a German passenger ship built in 1937 for the Nazi Strength Through Joy (Kraft durch Freude) program. At the outbreak of World War II, she was requisitioned by the Kriegsmarine and initially served as a hospital ship before being used as a floating barracks. In January 1945, during Operation Hannibal, she was tasked with evacuating German civilians, wounded soldiers, and military personnel from East Prussia and the Baltic region as Soviet forces advanced. On 30 January 1945, the ship was torpedoed in the Baltic Sea by the Soviet submarine S-13 and sank within hours. An estimated 9,343 people lost their lives, making the sinking of Wilhelm Gustloff the deadliest maritime disaster in modern history. The tragedy remains one of the most significant and least-known disasters of World War II.
