The United States is a former American passenger ship and remains the holder of the Blue Riband as the fastest steamship on the transatlantic route. She was operated as a liner by the United States Lines for regular service from New York to Europe on the Atlantic route. It is also known by the prefix SS, as SS United States; here, SS stands for the English term “Steam Ship,” referring to the use of steam turbines in its propulsion system.
